Harding Memorial
For an educational afternoon, hop in your Jeep Grand Cherokee and make a short trip to the Harding Memorial. Located In Marion, Ohio, the landmark is only 23 miles away on US-23.
The Harding Memorial is a magnificent circular monument of white marble erected in memory of President Warren G. Harding. It is in Marion, Harding’s hometown, and was dedicated on the tenth anniversary of his death. The monument is a majestic open-air structure reminiscent of ancient Greece in the neo-classical style. The Harding Memorial consists of 46 Doric Greek columns and was the last presidential site tomb of its kind built.
The Circus House
The Sells Mansion, aka the Circus House, is considered one of Columbus’s significant structures. It was built in the early 1900s by George W.Sells, a successful businessman and entrepreneur. The house is an eclectic architectural gem that has been preserved and cherished for many years. It’s a must-see if you’re visiting historic sites!
The Sells Mansion was designed by architect Frank Packard in the early 1900s. The renowned and prolific architect Frank Packard was also responsible for designing many of Columbus’s other significant buildings, like the Charles Lindenberg mansion and Orton Hall at Ohio State. The home is considered to be eclectic in design, with an Italianate style exterior and a Gothic Revival interior with red brick exterior walls and white stone trimming on its windows and doors.
The Sherman House Museum
The Sherman House Museum marks the birthplace of controversial Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and is a terrific place to learn about the Civil War. The museum has been recognized as one of Ohio’s most significant historic sites containing artifacts and furniture owned by General Sherman and his wife. In addition to Civil War artifacts, the Sherman House also contains many other items from the 19th century.
The Sherman House Museum is located at 137 East Main Street in Lancaster, Ohio. It is open Tuesday-Sunday 12 pm – 4 pm.
Hartman Rock Garden
The Hartman Rock Garden is a folk-art garden located in Springfield, Ohio, created by Harry George “Ben” Hartman and his wife, Ruth. Ben Hartman was an artist who worked as a stonecutter, and Ruth, his wife, was a teacher interested in gardening. The couple used 250,000 stones to create over 100 incredible structures and a variety of plants and flowers.
The garden was Ben Hartman’s life’s work and is a testament to ingenuity, creativity, and hard work. Every year, thousands of visitors tour the garden, which was restored by the Kohler Foundation in 2008. It is open all days of the year and is available for group tours.
