2020 Ram 1500 | Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Delaware in Delaware, OHThe Ram brand was named the 2020 Best Truck Brand by U.S. News and World Report. So which Ram truck do you get? The 1500 and the 2500 are both great in their own right. Here’s a look at some of the differences and similarities between them to help you choose!

Towing Capacity

Both vehicles are built to work hard. The Ram 1500 is smaller in size and has a smaller engine. Therefore, it can’t tow as much as its big brother the Ram 2500. That doesn’t mean the 1500 isn’t capable: when properly equipped it can tow up to 12,750 pounds!

The 2500 however, can haul an impressive 19,680 pounds when configured with the high-torque diesel powertrain. If you’re hauling heavy loads, then the 2500 is the logical choice.

Engine Options

Under the hood of each truck is a different engine. In fact, there are multiple engines to choose from on both the 1500 and 2500 series.

The 2020 Ram 1500 has three engines to choose from, starting with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque, a mild hybrid system. This motor gets 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Next in line is the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine and it gets 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.

The 1500 also offers a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine. What it lacks in horsepower it makes up for in torque coming in with 280 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.

The 2020 Ram 2500 also has three engines from which to choose. The Heavy Duty 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 comes in with a respectable 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty of power for most jobs.

A 6.7-liter Cummins inline 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine is available. It gets 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. If it’s torque you’re after then the High Output 6.7-liter Cummins inline 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine is the way to go. This powertrain pumps out 400 horsepower and a mind-blowing 1,000 pound-feet of torque.

Clearly, if you’re after torque – the 2500 has it in spades. If you’re looking for something more economical without sacrificing much in the power department then the 1500 is the choice for you.

Suspension Systems

Both trucks use similar technology on their suspension systems, with a few differences. The 2020 Ram 1500 can be equipped with an Active Air Dam that automatically lowers 2.5 inches at highway speeds to reduce drag and improve efficiency.

Or you can go for the full air suspension system. This four-corner system automatically lowers the entire vehicle at highway speeds.

The 2500 doesn’t offer the air dam, but does feature an auto-level rear suspension. This system automatically adjusts to shifting loads and changes in road camber. It also maintains a parallel hitch between truck and trailer for better towing control.

Those who do more heavy hauling will want the 2500. Those who value efficiency will appreciate the 1500.

Choosing between the Ram 1500 and the Ram 2500 comes down to what you need out of your truck – there are great reasons for buying either! Come test drive one today, and see which reasons are right for you!
