2023 Jeep Cherokee
For decades, the Jeep Cherokee has been a formidable player in the compact SUV car segment, adored by legions of fans for its impressive off-road performance, smooth handling, and spacious interior. While the new edition of the Cherokee eschews the nontraditional body type of previous generations in favor of a typical crossover design, it retains and, in some cases, improves on the performance capabilities that it's always been known for.
Trim Levels
For the 2023 edition, Jeep has made the Cherokee available in two trims: Altitude Lux 4x4 and Trailhawk. This is a massive shift from the four trim levels offered last year and the staggering nine trim levels the previous year. The Altitude Lux 4x4 features a gloss black finish for its body trims, grille surrounds, and badges. It also comes with standard 17-inch wheels, although there's an option for 18-inch sizes. The Trailhawk trim features upgrades like a security alarm and a universal garage door opener.
Engine
The 2023 Jeep Cherokee has two engine options. The Altitude Lux's powerplant is a 2.4-liter inline-four engine with a maximum output of 180 horsepower, while the Trailhawk's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers 270 horsepower. Both engines pair with nine-speed automatic transmissions to complete their drivetrains, and all-wheel drive comes standard in both models.
Performance
As you might expect with Jeep, the 2023 Cherokee offers a solid drive with far more balanced handling than many of its rivals. The sportier Trailhawk trim also has special features like the Jeep Active Drive Lock with a special traction mode to improve navigation on muddy or slippery roads. It also comes with heavier and more balanced tires, making it ideal for off-road driving. Both trims of the redesigned Cherokee also offer above-average fuel economy. The Altitude Lux gets an EPA rating of 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while the Trailhawk is rated 20 mpg for city driving and 26 mpg on the highway.
Interior
Despite having a high-mounted cabin, the 2023 Cherokee is easy to board. Its interior space matches Jeep's quality standards with leather-appointed seats and a user-friendly infotainment system that's incredibly easy to navigate. The front seats provide an excellent headroom measuring 39.4 inches, while the rear seats give you 38.5 inches. The Cherokee also offers a good amount of legroom in both rows, with the front seats providing 41.1 inches and the rear seats offering 40.3 inches. The Cherokee also offers an above-average cargo space of 25.8 cubic feet with the seats up and 54.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down.
Safety Features
The 2023 edition of the Cherokee has a state-of-the-art safety suite with plenty of useful driver assistance and safety technologies. Some standard features available on both trims of the Cherokee include forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear-cross traffic monitoring, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The Trailhawk version is also equipped with automatic high beams to enhance visual acuity and range on the road, especially in poorly lit nighttime conditions.
